Creating Mindful POC-Affirming Events

Courtney Williiams, The Brown Bike Girl, is a woman of color bicycle advocacy consultant based in Brooklyn NY. She has been a contracted to partner with city and regional government agencies, and nonprofit bike organizations across the nation to provide strategic guidanceĀ andĀ her anti-privliege & anti-bias cultural competency training (Outside Advocate).

Pre-COVID, Williams also coordinated free monthly bike rides for community of cyclists that were themed on elevating the awareness of People of Color’s issues and the experiences of POC in public space. Williams has lead imagined, routed, and lead over 30 such rides in the last decade.

In this session for allies from outside of the Black and Indigenous POC experience, Williams draws on examples of some of her most well-reviewed educational rides and presents

  • timely ideas for types of rides to elevate your local community’s awareness POC neighbor experiences, contributions, & current cultural events
  • guidelines to help you self-assess whether an event concept is truly useful or harmful to POC
  • help you create events that are more attractive to POC participation

The Brown Bike Girl’s Courtney Williams recently became the first person to be named the People’s Bike Mayor of NYC! Her first act of cyclist motivation during these new and challenging times is hosting weekly virtual social & educational “outings” for NYC’s cyclists online to help keep spirits high National Bike Month. Join Courtney and bike family from near and far to meet and play bingo based on the lives and adventures of her weekly bike advocacy and industry guests. Win prizes with each game and an extra raffle for all.
