Traffic engineers use the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, or MUTCD, when selecting roadway signage. This signage can be regulatory (e.g. “Stop”), cautionary (e.g. “Pavement Ends”) or wayfinding in nature (e.g. “2 miles to Downtown”).
