What a great time for bicycle advocacy in Georgia! After an energizing weekend with emerging advocates in Columbus, I spent this past Saturday morning in the company of Georgia’s newest bicycle advocacy organization, Wheel Movement of the CSRA.
A year in the making, Wheel Movement grew quickly and urgently after a tragic string of incidents in the Augusta area. Augusta’s cycling community has come together with purpose, with passion, and with a well-organized determination to make Augusta a safer, more bicycle friendly community.
Georgia Bikes was thrilled to be able to help them get on their feet with a Seed Grant in early 2011, which they promptly used to develop a solid organizational structure, strategic plan, and branding.
After a year of thorough and methodical organizing, Wheel Movement hosted a December 3rd Roll Out and Ride of Celebration, which was attended by an enthusiastic crowd of over a hundred local cyclists and cycling supporters. I was honored to be in attendance in the presence of so many dedicated and supportive cyclists.
Congratulations to Wheel Movement for its hugely successful kick-off!
With the continued assistance of Georgia Bikes and the Palmetto Cycling Coalition, Wheel Movement is poised to make great strides in improving the safety of Augusta’s roads for cyclists of all ages.
